The investment testifies the company’s commitment to sustainable and responsible mining, the official press release stated.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Newmont Corporation announced major investment at Porcupine mine-one of the largest gold mines in Canada located in Timmins, Ontario. The miner announced constriction of a new water treatment plant at the mine, which had recently celebrated 100th anniversary, at an expense of nearly $160 million.

The announcement of the new state-of-the-art water treatment plant was made during a site ceremony held on November 18, which was attended among others by Ontario Premier Doug Ford. The plant will collect and treat impacted water to be returned to surrounding watershed. The investment testifies the company’s commitment to sustainable and responsible mining, the official press release stated.

The construction of the modern water treatment plant is expected to be completed before the end of the current year. Once operational, it will be capable of returning up to 13 million cubic meters of treated clean water to the Mattagami, Frederickhouse and Upper Kapuskasing watersheds. In addition to creating around 100 contract jobs in the region, it will also result in improved water quality and ecosystem of Porcupine.

Newmont Corporation was commended for its environmental stewardship by Ontario Premier Doug Ford. George Pirie, MPP for Timmins and Minister of Mines, congratulated Newmont Porcupine on the important sustainability milestone.
