AISI: U.S. Raw Steel Output Posted Notable Dip

India continued to remain as the number one DRI producer worldwide, producing a record 39.11 Mt of DRI.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The annual production statistics published by the Charlotte, North Carolina-based Midrex Technologies Inc. indicates that global direct reduced iron (DRI) production in 2021 was 119.2 million tons, up by 13.7 percent from the 104.8 million tons produced in 2020. Also, this is up by 10.2% from the previous record of 108.1 Mt in 2019. It must be noted that global DRI output has registered a growth by nearly 61% from 2016.

The plants designed and supplied recorded a production of 70.85 Mt in 2021, a 12.3% increase compared to 2020. It noted that Midrex Technology continued to account for approximately 80% of worldwide production of DRI by shaft furnaces.

India continued to remain as the number one DRI producer worldwide, producing a record 39.11 Mt of DRI, recording an overall increase of 18.6%. The country reported the highest growth rates in its history. Production of DRI in Iran totalled 31.85 Mt in 2021, representing an increase by 5.4%, compared with 30.2 Mt in 2020. Meantime, Russia maintained its third place as a producing nation with 7.89 Mt of output during the previous year. In fourth and fifth place were Mexico and Saudi Arabia, with outputs of 6.13 Mt and 5.83 Mt respectively.

Other countries in the Middle East and North Africa region, especially Egypt and Algeria, recorded improved production in 2021.
