SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) indicates that the imports of finished steel mill products by the U.S. has been on the decline during recent months. The imports during the current three-month period recorded decline for most categories of finished steel mill products, upon comparison with the prior three-month period.

The 3-month rolling average of Wire rods imports during Sep – Nov ’22 stood at 69,000 net tons, significantly down by 46.1% when compared with the three-month rolling average of 127,000 net tons during the prior three-month period from June to August this year. The other finished steel product categories to register notable decline were sheets and strip all other metal coated, reinforcing bars and plates in coils. The only products to record increased import volumes were line pipes and standard pipes.

The imports from Brazil declined the most during the three-month period from September to November in 2022. The finished steel imports from that country dropped by 52.7% over the prior three-month period. The other countries to see dip in product volumes were Vietnam and Mexico. On the contrary, the three-month rolling average of imports from Germany, the Netherlands, India and Austria stood higher, AISI noted.
