SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Luxembourg-based steelmaker ArcelorMittal announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Zlomex- a leading Polish scrap metal recycling business. The transaction is expected to close during the initial half of 2023, subject to customary regulatory approvals. This is the fourth scrap metal acquisition by ArcelorMittal in Europe during the current year.

Zlomex operates two scrap yards located in Krakow and Warsaw. The two yards together processed and shipped nearly 400,000 tonnes of ferrous scrap metal during the previous year. The company had installed a new shredder and separation equipment at its Krakow operations last year and had announced enlargement of its Warsaw yard.

The polish scrap metal recycling business is a major supplier to a range of steel mills and foundries. It has been a long-standing supplier to ArcelorMittal’s steel plants in Dąbrowa Górnicza and Warsaw.

Geert Van Poelvoorde, CEO, ArcelorMittal Europe noted that the recent acquisitions, including that of Zlomex, will play an important role in enhancing its ability to deliver low-carbon emissions steel. Furthermore, he welcomed all employees of Zlomex to the group and stated that it looks forward to work with them, as it aims to enhance the use of recycled materials in its steelmaking processes.
