SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Li-Cycle- an industry leader in lithium-ion battery resource recovery announced opening of a new li-ion battery recycling facility in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This is the Toronto-based company’s fourth Spoke recycling facility in North America to commence commercial operations, after Kingston, Ontario; Rochester, New York and Gilbert, Arizona.

The Alabama facility extends over 100,000 square feet in size, with an additional warehousing capacity of approximately 120,000 square feet. The design of the facility is similar to that of Arizona Spoke. It has a total processing capacity of 10,000 tonnes of lithium-ion battery materials per year, with prospects for possible expansions in future. It has created almost 45 new jobs, said the company press release.

With this, the combined processing capability of all the four operating Li-Cycle plans has reached 30,000 tonnes per year. The company targets to more than double its input processing capability to 65,000 tonnes per annum across its Spoke facilities in North America and Europe.

Ajay Kochhar, co-founder and CEO of Li-Cycle said that the new facility enhances the company’s ability to support the recycling needs of our diverse and growing customer base in North America.
