SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Nucor Corporation announced its decision to join the United Nations 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Global Compact, thus becoming the first major industrial company to join the global effort, which strives to accelerate the decarbonization of the electricity systems in the world.

The company has been working with its electricity suppliers to access 24/7 clean energy at the company’s steel mills. In addition, Nucor has been investing in quite a few innovative projects aimed at accelerating the transition to 24/7 clean energy. For instance, the company had made a strategic investment in NuScale Power Corporation in April 2022, as part of its efforts to develop zero-carbon nuclear energy future.

Leon Topalian, Chaiman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Nucor Corporation noted that the company’s steel production over the past five decades has been built on low carbon footprint sustainable model. It is essentially critical for the company to adopt all forms of clean, zero-carbon energy sources, from wind, solar and hydro, to nuclear power, so as to achieve a carbon-free energy future, he added.
