ArcelorMittal Launched Trial Use of Low-Carbon Steel in Auto Parts


The mill is expected to become a critical part of the supply chain for the continued development of offshore wind power infrastructure in the country.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Charlotte, N.C.-headquartered Nucor Corporation announced that its new state-of-the-art steel plate mill in Brandenburg, Kentucky has achieved an important milestone by rolling out its first steel plate on Friday, December 30, 2022. Also, the company expects final commissioning of the mill and first customer shipments in Q1 this year.

The Brandenburg plate mill has the capacity to manufacture at scale the heavy gauge plate used in monopile foundations for offshore wind towers. It is one among the few mills globally and the only one in the U.S. with this capability. The mill is expected to become a critical part of the supply chain for the continued development of offshore wind power infrastructure in the country.

Leon Topalian, Chair, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Nucor Corporation congratulated more than 400 teammates for achieving the important milestone, executing one of the safest mill start-ups in the history of the company and ensuring delivery of the project on time and on budget. The company looks forward to supply sustainable, high quality steel to military, infrastructure, heavy equipment, offshore wind, and other markets.

The mill was built at a capital investment of $1.7 billion and has a production capacity of approximately 1.2 million tons per annum.
