Spotlight Steris: Keeping It Clean

Steris Corporation aims to prevent infection in operating rooms, labs, dental offices, and manufacturing plants around the world. A leader in sterilization technologies, this Knowledge Leader was founded in 1985 with a mission to create a healthier and safer world through innovation of sterile equipment and technologies. For the medical field, its sterilizing equipment uses a range of technologies from radiation (gamma rays, x-ray and electron beams) to gas and vapor from chemicals, like hydrogen peroxide. For pharmacy, Steris ensures injections meet sterile standards, and for dental offices, it ensures that single-use instruments and polishing tools are sterile.

Headquartered in Mentor, Ohio, today the firm’s biggest businesses are in healthcare and pharmaceutical, and it is these areas where the firm’s R&D teams have been focused on upgrading products across all product lines in preparation for the future. Looking forward, Steris expects much of its growth to be driven by aging population trends around the world, as a large percentage of the population enters its “prime healthcare consumption years.” In addition, the company expects future growth to be driven by two more trends: a general increase in hospital-acquired infections, and new vaccine demands as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A supplier for more than 40 years to many of the world’s influential R&D labs, Steris understands the importance of trials in the development process, and one of the ways it works together with labs to facilitate testing is by offering small quantities of its technologies until full production volumes become necessary.
