SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The total steel imports stood at 2.006 million net tons during the month of November this year, as per the most recent statistics published by the U.S. Census Bureau. This is modestly lower by 17.0% when compared with the imports during the prior month. The finished steel imports too registered decline by 10.7% month-on-month to total 1.758 million net tons. Year-to-date, the total and finished steel imports surged higher by 0.2% and 14.1% respectively.
The finished steel product that reported highest surge in import volumes was oil country goods, whose imports during November this year recorded nearly 35% surge over the prior month. The imports of plates in coils too were up by 11%. The largest suppliers during the month were Canada, Mexico, Brazil, South Korea and Germany.
Over the 12-month period from December 2021 to November 2022, the total and finished steel imports were up by 4.8% and 17.4% respectively. The finished steel import market share was estimated at 22% in November and 24% over the initial eleven-month period of the current year, noted AISI.
The products with significant year-to-date increases over the 12-month period from December 2021 to November 2022 compared to the previous 12-month period included standard pipes and oil country goods, whose imports spiked by 52% and 48% respectively.
