WBMS: World Copper Metal Balance in Deficit Until May


The world copper mine production rose significantly from 16.7 million metric tonnes (Mt) in 2012 to 21.1 Mt in 2021.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The International Copper Study Group (ICSG) announced publication of 2022 Statistical Yearbook, which provides world copper supply and demand data for the ten-year period between 2012 and 2021.

The world copper mine production rose significantly from 16.7 million metric tonnes (Mt) in 2012 to 21.1 Mt in 2021. The concentrate production surged higher by 32%, whereas the SX-EW output rose by 6%. The highest CAGR growth of 14% was reported in the D.R. Congo. Indonesia and Peru witnessed CAGR growth of 13% and 8%.

The world refined copper production rose from 20.2 Mt., growing at a CAGR of 2.3%, to touch 24.8 Mt. The primary and secondary refined production increased by 2.5% per year and 1.7% per year respectively. Over the past decade, the Chinese annual refined production surged at a CAGR of 7%. On the other hand, the refined production in Chile registered 22% decline.

Over the 10-year period, the world apparent refined copper usage recorded 23% surge, primarily driven by China. The Chinese apparent usage grew at a CAGR of 5%, with the country’s share of world usage increasing from 43% in 2011 to more than 55% in 2021. Meantime, the world copper usage excluding China registered nominal decline over the decade.
