SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has released the list of top 10 steel producing nations during the month of August this year.
China topped the list, with the country’s output recording marginal surge by 0.5% over the previous year. The country’s crude steel output totalled 83.9 Mt during the month. The cumulative output during the first eight months of the current year totalled 693.2 Mt, down considerably by 5.7% over the same period in 2021.

India’s estimated output, at 10.2 Mt, recorded a surge by 1.2% over August 2021. The country produced 83.5 Mt of steel during Jan-Aug ’22, significantly higher by 7.1% over the previous year. Incidentally, India emerged as one of two countries to report year-on-year surge in output, the other being Iran. The Japanese output dipped sharply by 7.4% during the month to total 7.3 Mt, while its cumulative output was down by 5.2% over Jan-Aug ’21 to total 60.7 Mt until August this year.
The U.S. produced 7.0 Mt of steel, down by 7.1% year-on-year. Russia is estimated to have produced 5.9 Mt, down by 5.5% year-on-year. The output by other countries in the top ten list in Mt is as follows: South Korea (6.1), Germany (2.9), Turkey (2.8), Brazil (2.8) and Iran (2.1). Turkey recorded largest year-on-year dip in steel output during the month, among the top ten producing countries, falling significantly by 8.8%.
