SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The global trade of ferrous scrap was a mixed bag during the previous year.

The latest data released by Brazilian Customs Department indicates that the country exported approximately 370,000 tons of steel scrap during the previous year. This is down by almost 27% when compared with the year before. The primary export destinations were Bangladesh and India, which accounted for 40% and 32% of the total exports respectively. The third largest importer of scrap from Brazil was Taiwan, which received 8% of the country’s total exports.

In the month of December alone, Brazil exported 21,600 tons of steel scrap. The exports were down by 15% when matched with those during December 2021. The largest export destinations were India (15,000 tons), Bangladesh (4,800 tons) and China (700 tons).

Meantime, the country imported around 43,000 tons of steel scrap during the previous year, down significantly by 82% from 2021.

The Taiwanese scrap imports totaled around 239,000 tons in December 2022, down by 17% from the prior month. The largest source of imports was the U.S., who supplied around 101,100 tons of scrap to Taiwan. Japan and Dominican Republic were ranked second and third with supplies of 55,100 tons and 18,700 tons respectively. Meantime, the country’s scrap exports dipped by 13% month-on-month to nearly 2,300 tons in December last year, Customs data said.
